OKX has launched an SMSF digital asset platform to assist trustees integrate digital assets into the portfolios of their funds.

Cryptocurrency exchange OKX has launched a specific SMSF platform in Australia aimed at giving both individual and corporate trustees the ability to integrate digital assets into their funds’ investment portfolios.

The service provider indicated it made the move in response to the growing demand SMSFs have shown for digital assets, with data OKX cited revealing cryptocurrency allocations within the sector surged by 746 per cent in the five years to March 2025.

“The stats show a significant increase in digital asset allocations, which is why OKX has decided to launch an SMSF platform with infrastructure and reporting tools that trustees can use,” OKX chief executive Kate Cooper confirmed.

“Our commitment is to deliver a truly comprehensive, compliance-focused solution – giving trustees confidence, transparency and local support to engage with digital assets should they choose to do so as part of their investment strategy.”

The OKX SMSF crypto-platform provides secure infrastructure for trustees to buy, manage and report on digital assets. It also has dashboards for transaction and portfolio monitoring, exportable end-of-financial-year reports, and AUSTRAC-registered digital currency exchange services across major assets such as Bitcoin and Ethereum.

Further, it provides institutional-grade cryptocurrency custody, implements multi-signature security measures and produces monthly proof-of-reserves reports for 22 widely traded assets.

“Trustees have been crying out for institutional-grade infrastructure that doesn’t compromise on compliance or security. That’s exactly what we’ve built,” Cooper explained.

“This isn’t about chasing a trend, it’s about providing serious infrastructure for SMSF trustees choosing to include digital assets in their portfolios. Australian SMSF trustees manage more money than most sovereign wealth funds. They deserve enterprise-level solutions.”

The platform was created following extensive consultation with trustees and industry professionals who identified regulatory uncertainty and operational complexity as key barriers to crypto adoption in the SMSF space.

The launch comes after the formation of the SMSF Innovation Council, an industry-led group aimed at exchanging knowledge and discussing digital assets among superannuation professionals.
